The General Fireproofing Company (GF) Founded in 1902 in Youngstown, Ohio. In 1929 GF began manufacturing their own aluminum chairs, the first of which were shipped in 1930. These first chairs were copies of the wood office chairs popular at the time, and were even painted with woodgrain finishes.
During World War II, GF ceased production of all its regular products in order to manufacture aircraft parts. After VJ Day, almost the entire plant had to be converted back to the manufacture of furniture, and by 1946 the company was producing the same volume they were in 1938. In 1948, GF introduced the Mode-Maker line of executive office desks, designed in collaboration with Raymond Loewy. Many of GFs furniture lines were discontinued in the 1970s.

Designed
by Charles Pollock
As
exemplified in the conceptual visions of his designs, Pollock has a
strong internal and emotional connection to seating. It was Florence
Knoll's recognition of his unique talent that secured his reputation
as one of the world's preeminent furniture designers. He is the
recipient of many awards including the IBD Bronze Medal and the Dutch
Institution for Industrial Design. Pratt Institute's 1991 tribute to
Pollock honored him with its Excellence by Design Award.
Vintage
Heywood Wakefield children's chair 6.
Its
name is Kevi and it was designed in 1958 by the Danish twin brothers
and architects Ib and Jorgen Rasmussen.
In
the chair's lifetime, it has received several design awards, e.g. for
the Kevi wheel, which Jorgen Rasmussen designed for the chair in
1965.
In
fact it was the Kevi chair that finally gave the world the ideal
solution for sitting comfortably while at the same time being able to
move the chair easily in all directions.
Made
in Denmark later made by knoll in the USA.
Jorgen
Rasmussen and his twin brother Ib Rasmussen were born in Odense,
Denmark on April 26, 1931. Jorgen was born 10 minutes before Ib,
making him the older brother. Both brothers are architects and
studied at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of
Architecture in Denmark where they graduated in 1955. During their
education, the identical twins found great pleasure in confusing
others with their identification so they dressed the same and took on
similar roles. Ib was in Greece when he should have been graduating
from the academy, so Jorgen posed as his brother, and answered Ib
final questions to the Academy council members. Directly after
graduation, the brothers served in the Danish Navy for 14 months and
afterwards began their careers as architects.
In
1957 the twins started their own studio, where they quickly gained
success with their architecturally-designed single-family houses and
at the same time, won several architectural competitions. At the
beginning of this period, they both separately won the gold medal
from the academy. Their studio never employed more than 6 workers,
because they thought that they would lose direct contact if there
were more employees.
In
1958, they were hired as designers for the business KEVI A/S, at
request of the manager and main shareholder Bent Harlang. The
business started because they built a very successful house for Bent
Harlang and, because they had good chemistry, the twins were asked to
further develop the firmas chairs. By the end of the 60s, the seating
furniture to beat were the Kevi Chairs, a multipurpose work chair for
the office or home. During this time, Jorgen Rasmussen was mainly
involved in the development of the Kevi Chairs.
In
1965, Jargen invented the double-wheel castors (for which he was
awarded the ID-prize and the Kevi castor went on to become a Danish
cultural product). The castor was originally developed for the Kevi
Chairs, but its application possibilities are far greater. The Kevi
Castor is used in many products for various firms such as for Bang &
Olufsen, Philips television, and in IKEA products.
In
1986, when Kevi A/S and Fritz Hansen A/S merged, the production and
market leadership of the Kevi Series went under the Fritz Hansen
Brand. In early 2008, Jorgen Rasmussen joined the production and
market management rights of the Kevi series of Engelbrechts A/S, who
now own the product brand Kevi.

Jens
Risom. CHAIR.
Jens
Risom emigrated from Europe to the U.S. when he was just 23 years of
age. Like other Scandinavian designers such as Josef Frank and Kaare
Klint, Risom continued to honor tradition in modern design, combining
old and new in highly original ways.
Jens
Risom`s career has spanned nearly sixty years. He began his study of
design in the Copehagen workshop of Kaare Klint in 1935 and joined
Ernst Kuhn`s architectural office in 1938, where he designed
furniture and interiors. In 1939, Risom emigrated to the U.S. and in
1941 designed the first chair manufactured by Knoll. Risom described
the chair as "very basic, very simple, inexpensive, easy to
make." The chair was constructed with a birch wood frame and,
because of wartime materials constraints, cheap but strong army
surplus webbing and has inspired countless imitations.
Risom
continued to create simple, well-crafted modern furniture with Knoll
and George Jensen, but established his own design studio, Jens Risom
Design, in 1946. The studio was acquired by Dictaphone in 1970 and in
1973, Risom became chief executive of Design Control, a Connecticut
based design consultancy.
In
the 1970`s, he acted as a trustee of the Rhode Island School of
design. Now in his eighties, Jens Risom continues to be active and
his work continues to reflect the Danish approach to modernism, with
its emphasis on traditional values and the human need for warmth,
beauty and simplicity. Modern American design owes much to his
unfailing sense of proportion, commitment to practicality and insight
into the forms of modern living.

Mid Century Oak and Upholstered Arm Lounge Chair by Jamestown Lounge Co., N.Y. for their "Americana Casual"collection. Circa 1950s. The Jamestown Co. began building furniture of note just after the turn of the century and became popular in the 1930s/40s for their Jacobean style "Feudal Oak" style home furnishings. By the 1950s they were translating the mid century aesthetic into oak and upholstered furnishings for the home, schools and hotel/motel locations. The frame is solid and in excellent condition.

Mid Century wood and black welded iron frames.
Mid century Danish, in the traditional style of the Windsor chair.
The first of the Butterfly chairs came out of the Argentinian architectural firm, Grupo Austral, in 1938. The Austral Group was comprised of Jorge Ferrari-Hardoy, Juan Kurchan and Antonio Bonet, who had met as assistants in Le Corbusier's Paris atelier. The chair is occasionally known as the BKF chair, for Bonet-Kurchan-Ferrari, but an official letter from the firm attributed primary authorship of the design to Ferrari-Hardoy, which is why it is also occasionally known as the Hardoy chair. The chair may have been designed for a project the Austral Group was building in Buenos Aires, but it was first introduced at the 3rd Salon de Artistas Decoradores, a design exhibition held in that city in 1940, where it won two prizes. It also attracted the attention of Edgar Kaufmann jr. who had just become the Curator of Industrial Design at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Kaufmann bought two chairs, one for MoMa's collection, and one for his parents' new Frank Lloyd Wright-designed house, Fallingwater. Kaufmann considered it to fall within MoMA's concept of "Good Design," because it was functional, handsome, lightweight, and relatively inexpensive.First mass-produced in the US by Alvar Aalto's company Artek (the name a contraction of "art" and "technology"), the chair was composed of two bent tubular steel rods welded together, over which a leather sling was hooked, creating a suspended seat. Knoll bought the US rights to the chair in 1947, but stopped production in 1951 because of a seminal court ruling that did not allow Knoll to sue other manufacturers for making unauthorized reproductions of the Butterfly chair — the court determined that Hardoy's chair was itself too similar to earlier precedents to claim copyright protection. While the Butterfly chair was perhaps the first of its kind in tubular steel, similar constructions in wood had been around at least since the 1850s, when an English engineer named Joseph Beverly Fenby created a folding "campaign" sling chair for use by the British military.
Designer Takeshi Nii named the "NY Chair" after his family name Nii, and also the Danish word for "new" or "fresh". The designer's passion for chairs began when he saw a director's chair in a magazine before WWII. While repeating tests for functional chairs, Nii saw a beautiful chair with a fabric seat from Denmark. Inspired by these chairs, Nii produced this folding chair (designed in 1958) which won numerous awards and later became a permanent feature at MOMA in 1970.
